Production log

Having now completed constructing my front cover contents page and double page spread I will now go on and evaluate my media product. I will do this by getting some audience feedback.

Completed Media Product

Final Double Page Spread

This is my final double page spread I have now cheeked all the sealing and grammar mistakes and changed the colour of the title so it is more suited to the page I also created a shadow on the title to helping it to stand out more.

Construction of Double Page Spread

Double Page Drafts 3

Here I have made the previous amendments where I have changed the front of my main title; also I have rearranged the text helping to fill any blank spots previously seen. I have changed the colour of my floating quote to the same colour of the sitar helping to tie the pages together. For my finial double page spread I will have to proof read my work cheeking for any spelling and grammar mistakes. I will also have to change the colour of the main title in order for it to stand out.

Double Page Drafts 2

In this draft I have made some amendments such as the background colour. I have also added a sofa for the artist to sit on; the sofa is a tradition sofa that most sitar artist use, relating it back to the theme of my magazine. After constructing this draft and comparing it to the previous I prefer the page without a background, also my teacher also advised me to not have the same colour scheme in all three of my pages, so I have opted to go with a plane background as I think it makes the page look more supplicated. The amendments I will make is changing the background back to white, recording the texts as there are some empty white areas, I will also be changing the font of the title and the colour of the floating quote.

Double Page Drafts 1

This is my first draft of my double page spread. some amendments can clearly be made such as changing the colour of the floating quote to suit the mood of the page or the font of the main title so it differentiate itself from the text’s, also try and create a background and see how that looks.

Production log

Having now completed my contents page I will be making a start on my double page spread I have already given in my article which has not been marked by my teacher and read over by a friend. Above I have posted my finished article along with any corrections made in another colour. I have learnt that this process of designing a bag is very time consuming form my front cover and double page I will take this on board and try and finish my double page more efficiently.

Sunday 3 April 2011

Finial Contents Page

This is my finial contents page in this one i have made all the necessary aments I have cheeked for any spelling errors, I have also added and edited another image. This image is of a male artist at a mixing task I have chosen to add this image in at the last minute as I felt that the magazine looks as though it was geared towards females only which is not the case as my target market in mind were males and females.

Tuesday 29 March 2011

Contents page 5th draft

In this attempt the amendments I have made are that all the pictures on the left hand side of the page they are also tilted slightly from different corners. I have also added black lines between each subheading these help to divide up the sup heading making them more easily accessible.
To further develop my contest page I will need to find a male artist to put in the contents page as at the moment my magazine is neglecting the male target audience. However it can be argued that males are enticed to buy the magazine as the women will appeal to them.

Contents page 4th draft

I this draft I have changed the layout as the pictures are mainly on the left now unlike previously where they were on the right also I have removed the image of the guy and girl together and replace it with another picture of a girl stuck in a painting.

Monday 28 March 2011

Contents page 3rd draft

Here I have again altered the layout to make it more easily accessible an editorial has also been added along with a smaller version of my front cover followed by more images.
To improve I would edit the images more by adding effects and correct any spelling or grammatical errors .

Contents page 2nd draft

In this draft I have altered the layout from the previous draft, I have also written up some more copy with page number. There are also more pictures now.
To improve I could write an editorial and include a small picture of my front cover, also I could change the background as it is very overpowering at the moment, perhaps the backgrounds could be the same as the front covers background as it will show consistency through the magazine.

Contents page 1st draft

In this draft I have established a layout and suggested spaces for images to be placed I have also started to write some of the copy.
To improve draft I will consider changing the background colour and begin to collect images to fill up the empty gaps, I should also finish writing up the copy along with page numbers.

Production log

Having now completed my front cover I will begin with my content and double page spread. During this week I have given in my first draft article, made corrections and it has not been re-submitted for my teacher to have a finial check. The difficulties I had faced when constructing my front cover was taking the write image, and because of this i had to take so many pictures, as many images did not suit, whereas other were blurry. I plan to take this on board when constructing my contents page and double page spread.

Final Front Cover

Third Draft Front Cover

Here I have developed my front cover further by adding a price and changing the front of my sell lines so it is better suited to magazine. However I believe I still need to make amendments as my teacher has spotted some spelling errors which I will rectify.

Second Draft Front Cover

In this draft I have changed the background colour form green to white, because I felt that the green was too over powering and after testing numerous other backgrounds found that a simple plain white background would be most effective. From the previous daft I came to a conclusion that the image was not rite so I decided to change it, I then cut this new image out and added a shadow to it. I have also added and moved around some of the sell lines around the image, I also changed the colours and font of these sell lines.
To improve this draft I will try to find a more suited font for the sell line and also experiment more with the backgrounds as when white looks plain.

First Draft Front Cover

Here I have constructed the first draft of my front cover but I feel amendments can be made on the background. I also feel that I could use more sell lines and perhaps try using a different picture that are more neatly cut out for instance the centre is not cut out properly so the back is not seen. It also lacks some key features such as a website address and the price.

Thursday 3 March 2011

Production long

I have now planned what I would like my magazine I will now take pictures and start my actual construction. I may have to make amendments to my ideas to ensure my magazine looks professional and suits my target audience I will also take many pictures and eliminate the photos that are not suitable.

I have now looked at some possible fonts therefore I am going to look at some colours which i can associate with my genre of music. This will help to develop my magazine.

Font Pratice - Thaal (rthythm)

Font Pratice- Desi Beats

Font Pratice- Dhool

Production log

Having now sketched possible layouts of my magazines front cove, content page and double page spread. I will now do some font development to understand which font will best suit my magazine.

Chosen Layout

I have chosen this layout for my Double Page Spread as it different from other I have previously seen and the idea of having one single dominating picture of my artist in the middle would be very effective as it would show my artist is the centre of attention. Whereas the other lay out is very plain and boring.

I have chosen this layout for the front cover of my magazine, because it’s more structured than the other. I hope to try and incorporate  the banner form my other idea, other than I am worried if it would make the front cover look too crowded as it would already have a large speech mark.

Ideas/ sketches Developed – Double Page Spread

After deciding upon a title for my double page spread I then re-sketched my double page spread. Allowing me to visualise how my finished piece would look, as a result I was also to incorporate features that were previously forgotten such as page number along with the month and year of issue.

Sketches/ ideas developed - Front Cover

After deciding upon a name “Desi Beats” I then re-sketched my front cover. This allowed me to visualise how my finish product will look. It also allows me to think of any changes an example of how the previous sketch allowed me to realise I did not have a website address which I then incorporated into this ketch as well as the magazines name and date of issue.

Sketches/ ideas

Above are some sketches of what a front cover, content page and double page spread should contain along with some ideas I had for the layout of my magazine front cover, content page and double page spread to look like.

Here I brainstormed possible names form my music magazine. I then took these names and asked my focus group which name they preferred.

Here I was unsure of the name of my magazine so have left these spaces blank. I have tried to use the typical convections of a front cover such as a mast head, sell line, barcode, price and issue date  I have forgotten to add one other key convention which is a website address however I will ensure on real cover it will be there. By constructing these sketches I am able to visualise how my final front cover would look.
The two sketches although following the same conventions are laid out slightly differently as one has a banner and the other does not, I then chose which layout I preferred and went on to construct my front cover.

Here is a sketched plan of my contents page. I have tried to use the typical convections of a contents page such; an editorial, images, date/issue, features and an image of my front cover. These typical conventions are used to attract readers, it also helps to encourage people to buy the magazine.

Here is a sketched plan of my double page spread. The features of a double page spread I have included are; page number with the issue date, an image of my main artist and the copy. I have looked through may magazine double page spreads to gain some ideas of what mine should look like. I hope to try and incorporate social networking as it is a growing craze.

Wednesday 23 February 2011

Production Log

I have now completed my focus group interview and I will now be using the information they have given me to develop a layout for my magazine.

Thursday 3 February 2011

Interview

Here is my fully edited focus group interview.

As a part of my primary research I carried out a focus group interview where I asked 3 people who are likely the target audience for my music magazine questions on what my magazine should contain and be called. I recorded this interview with a Dictaphone. I then took this recording and edited it, using adobe sound booth to take away any disturbance.

Production log

I have now completed my Questioner and have also analysed my results to understand the indented audience. I will now conduct a focus group which will include questions I was unable to ask in my questioner. It will also allow me to gain more personal detailed answers

Questionnaire Results

After collecting the results of my questionnaire I was able to convert the information in to graphs and charts shown in the slide. The graphs and charts allowed me to compare and analyse my results as the graphs were very clear and easy to interpret.

Wednesday 2 February 2011

Auidence research-Questionnaire

As a part of my primary research I carried out a questionnaire where I handed out these questionnaires to my target audience. The questionnaires were anomalous allowing the respondents to answer freely without any added pressure.

Production log

Now I have analysed 3 front cover, 2 content pages and 2 double page spreads this will give me a good insight of that to include in my own magazine. I will now send out questionnaires to understand what my target audience is interested in.

Double Page spread Analysis -2

This double page spread uses a typical convention such as page numbers, along with the month and year of issue.  In this double page spread the main image consist of the artist Saif Ali Khan is sitting in a leather seated convertible car, wearing an expensive watch and pair sunglasses.  He appears to be driving into a ranch; this all connotes wealth and success as a ranch is a large piece land which is very expensive, along with his convertible car, expensive watch and sunglasses which are all luxuries. This in the Asian community shows status and stereotypical Asian are status conscious.
This image of the artist is taken at an angle, this shot has been used so the reader appears to be looking up at Saif Ali Khan, reinforcing his higher status. This image is staged and not a natural image showing his fame and significance in the film and music industry. The introduction informs us that Saif Ali Khan is a producer, actor and musician, showing how diverse and skilled he is as an artist. The name blender means a mix; therefore they use artists with a variety of skills like Saif Ali Khan in association with the magazine title showing a blend of different media from movies to music. The copy uses language devices such as alliteration to engage the reader an example of this is “sweet song of success.” The alliteration also sticks in the readers mind.
Page 44 and 45 is the main article, it begins with a large speech mark this shows the reader that the article will be a question and answer interview. The article is structured in columns along with division lines helping to organise the page and making it more readable, this typical convention is used in magazines. The questions in the article are highlighted in bold to help them stand out which is used to capture the reader. The background on page 44 is white where as on page 45 it is black these two colours are contrasting helping them both to stand out and catch the reader’s eye. This page also follows other conventions such as the page number, month and year of issue on the bottom of both pages.
On page 44 the caption above the image reads “this is my Tom Cruise look” these types of quotes are used to show the audience that they have a western side to them. This method is used to cater for a larger market audience and to a variety of media interests. There is a floating quote on page 45 which reads “I enjoy playing the guitar it’s a wonderful feeling” this shows the artist is very diverse, as in the interview it asks him questions about his new film. Floating quote’s are used to attract the reader into reading the whole article. The interviewee also asks about his activities on social networking sites for instance Twitter and his Facebook page, social networking sites are a growing industry, where artist promote themselves for free on these sites.  The use of IT has increased, during the interviewing the artist suggest social networking sites which shows that the magazine is adapting and changing to the modern technological world.

The article continues onto the next page, here the interview continues, it also consist of a timeline of Saif Ali khan’s career this highlights the key points in his career showing the most significant epoch such as when he stared in the hit movie “Kal Ho Naa Ho” in 2003. This was imperative as the movie was such a big hit, he also won many awards  for Best Supporting Actor in the Zee Cine Awards, National Film Awards, Star Screen Awards and the Filmfare Awards. This was a huge turning point of his career as it led to many movies as well as him finding out about his passion in others arts such as music and producing. The images on this page are more natural than the previous pages this connotes realism helping the audience to relate to him.

Having thoroughly analysed the 6 pages spreads the pages were detailed enough, this is something I hope not to do in my own magazine. Overall by analysing this double page spread I have learnt about the conventions of a double page spread, which I should incorporate when constructing my own double page spared such as the page number, month and year of issue. I also hope to have more copy than this blender issue; I would also lay it out in a differently as this layout is very plain and not so eye catching like some of the other spreads.

Double Page Spread Analysis -1

In this double page the key image is of the band “The Teenagers”. The font used on this spread makes the writing easy to read relating to the target audience. The title of this article is the band’s name; it is easily identified as it is highlighted in blue. Other important information is also highlighted in blue such as the “need to know” box which contains other information. The quotes from the band are also highlighted in the same colour as the title “of course we are a sexual band were the teenagers and that’s all they think about”. This quote also relates to the teenage target audience. The use of highlighting helps the information to stand out it also links the information together and presents it as one.
The left hand side of the page consists of a large picture of the band it seems as if the picture is taken from a high angle, this helps the audience to see all three members of the band sitting on a bed. They are wearing casual clothes surrounded by different pictures which are stuck on the wall, this mise-en-scene helps to reinforce a typical teenage boy’s room this is achieved through their laid back facial expressions and the pictures and posters stuck up on their walls. This helps the audience to identify with the band as it is something they most probably have in their room. However, at the same time they aspire to be more like them as they are famous. In the left hand corner there is a small “need to know” box which appears to be ripped out of a school book, or note pad which carries connotation of adolescence which would relate back to the band’s name “The Teenagers” showing their childish side. The box also sticks out from it surrounding, suggesting it is important information as it is contrasting with the rest of the page and the background.
The article is written on the right hand page. The page here is again further divided into two half’s, one half about the band, and the other half about bands that are similar to them. The background colour and the use of a division line is used to separate the page. This separation could represent the segregation of this band and other bands. The colour scheme used for the main article about “The Teenagers” background consist of black writing while the other remaining article based on similar bands is on a black background with white writing. Both articles use contrasting colours in order for them to help the writing to stand out. In the article it says “NME loves” this is added support to the band by the magazine which in turn could help increase the bands sales, again showing the segregation as this band is supported by the magazine and the others are not. This could also suggest that the band is a new and an upcoming group to watch.  At the bottom of “The Teenagers” article there is a red box which consists of a website address which is another feature added to attract more readers in order to find more information about the band and the magazine.

Contents Page Analysis -2

The blender July 2010 there is a range of different artists featured from a range of different genres (Eminem who is rapper and Lady Gaga who is a pop artist) and industries showing that the magazine is very diverse and caters for many different genres. They use a variety of artist, genres to target a wider audience.
The contents page depicts a simple sophisticated colour scheme where it uses many neutral colours such as white, creams and pastel colours. These provide a calm atmosphere which relaxes the reader. The colour scheme also suggests the magazine is aimed at adults as younger children may prefer more vibrant colours. The use of red emphasises on particular artists.  However the magazine still uses words such as “burner” and “loaded” proving a less serious tone to the magazine.
The contents page contains information of what the magazine will enclose. It provides information on new realises, artist information, and also the cover story and featured sub stories. This is to engage the audience to buy and read the magazine, as they would get a summary about an interesting topic. It has clear page numbers next to each heading and the information is clearly organised for the reader and easily accessible, with pictures to act as a visual aid. Many magazines use a mixture of visual aids as well as typography; this is due to people getting engaged to different styles.

Contents Page Analysis-1

A Vibe contents page is normally spread over a few pages; this page is associated to a Master Page. A contents page does not contain much information as it only highlights the simple but valuable information featured in the main articles. However, the information written on the contents page is very appealing as the magazine hopes to attract many readers to read the main articles. This page informs the reader on the regular features and fashion which are in the magazine.
The large “V” in the background reinforces the magazine name “vibe”. This is a typical feature seen on every contents page of the vibe magazine. The word “Contents” is split up into three sections, this helps to divide up the page as one half is about what the magazine contains and all the written text on the right of the page and the other half of the page consist of a picture of a seductive woman. Splitting up the word “contents” and keeping it in large blocked white letters draws attention to an audience. The subtle use of black gray and white complements each other creating an almost seamless feel where all the colours are almost one this is very affective as it helps the page to flow as one.
The image is of a woman named Ciara who is a famous R&B singer, she is lying at the bottom of the page making her the last thing we see this could suggest she is the most important aspect of the page and she is what we as the reader are supposed to remember. Her image is also quite large and seductive creating the effect that she is dominating the page, as all the attention is focused on her.  Audiences may see this image and as a result aspire to be like her as she is fashionably dressed.

Textual Analysis-Front Cover 3

Rave had been around in India for 10 years it covers every genre of music and provides a new perspective on international music it is one on the largest music magazines in India.
The font of the mast head is very electric and is written in bright blue drawing attention to itself. The font does not have any real association to gender so it is not limiting the magazines audience to just one gender. The name “Rave” subjects a party and maybe there is a party going on inside the magazine enticing the audience to read the magazine, it also depicts the perfect image for the them as a brand of a music magazine.
The key image is of “Fergie” who is not only a famous singer but a sexy icon. Rave have decided to put her on the front cover as this would both attract the audience and she would be able to promote herself. The dress she has worn is the same color as the title of the magazine she also contrast with the black wallpapered background helping her to stand out and grab the reader’s eye. The magazine only consists of a few main colors which are white, blue, black and red. This continuous color scheme helps keep the audience focused and stops them from getting confused. Fergie’s hand gestures are also very particular they connote the Asian culture as they are a bharatanatyam hand gesture which is a famous form of classical Indian dance. This shows Fergie in a new light and helps the readers to see an alternative aspect of both culture and music, as she not an Indian artist the hand gesture would help the readers to identify with her. Fergie is directly addressing the audience; this is another way in which the audience can feel more involved.
The sell lines around Fergie are used to entice the customers mainly males to buy the magazine, as stereotypical most women will read these magazine regardless. The Rave uses both enticing sell lines and an attractive model which allows the reader to gain an insight of what the magazine is consists. The artist listed in the copy help to identify the genre of the music featured in the magazine Fergie is a pop artist whilst Ornette Coleman is a Jazz artist this could suggest the magazine caters for many different genres of music therefore appealing to a wider audience. In the copy language devises such as alliteration is used “duchess of debauchery” to help draw the reader in. They also use buzz words such as “Exclusive” to suggest the magazine is fashionable and if the readers were to miss out on this issue they would be out casted and have a lower self esteem.
